When people find out I'm a photographer I often hear "I've always wanted to do a photography course" or "I'm terrible when it comes to photos" and more often than not it leads into my mantra ... "just take more and you'll get better."

I'm not sure who said it but I love the quote "The best camera is the one you have with you" and the huge explosion of reasonable quality camera's we now have on our mobile phones..... means we are well equipped to keep snapping.

A client recently had some portraits taken of her gorgeous little girl and we got to talking about photographing children. Now lets face it - You will never take more photographs in your life than when your kids are growing up. My two at 4 & 5 years old are now so used to being photographed - I get the "not again Dad" look in virtually every frame.

She asked me what was the best way to take pics with her iphone and my answer was simple..... "Often!"

On a more practical note I said natural light is your best friend and today's tip is about capturing a natural light portrait of your little one.

One of the most important and emotive parts of portrait photography is lighting. It will set the mood of the photograph and make or break it in most cases.

Try this: Find a window your little one can get close to and position them comfortably either standing or sitting. For the little ones, throw a few cushions around them so they stay comfortable and even a toy or two will help. (You want them there for at least a minute or two)

Now from the side - frame the shot nice and close to the face from an angle slightly above the child so they will be inclined to look up at you and simply keep shooting as you interact.

You'll achieve two things - the single source natural light from the window will fill one side of the subjects face with bright light and the other will be slightly darker giving that 'portrait' look and secondly - but positioning your self slightly above your subject, your going to get those gorgeous puppy dog eyes looking up at you.

Go on - try it today and let me know how you got on.
